DACA

In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Trump’s attempt to end the successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was “arbitrary and capricious.” This decision means that our DACA recipients who were brought to the U.S. without documentation when they were children can continue to remain in the United States, earn a living and contribute to our society. However, the Trump administration is using the DACA recipients as political bait to get Congress to agree to other anti-immigrant provisions he is seeking, so the fight goes on.

Meanwhile, we give thanks to the young people whose scholastic and professional achievements have made the DACA program a success. Because of the charitable contributions by donors like you, Hispanic Federation supported DACA recipients like Haide, Naflan and Maria. Haide will continue her goal of becoming a community health worker and will be able to continue to support her family and community. Naflan’s work with the City of New York to help those dealing with addiction will continue and he will be one step closer to becoming a state senator and helping the neediest among us. Maria will be able to continue to pursue her studies and fulfill her dream of becoming a social worker to support communities of color.

TITLE VII

In another landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a 6-3 decision that protects LGBTQ employees from being fired. In doing so, the Court recognized that discrimination against LGBTQ employees constitutes sex discrimination, in violation of Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

JUNETEENTH PLEDEGE FOR RACIAL EQUITY

In an unprecedented show of support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Hispanic Federation’s 67 employees dedicated June 19th as a day of learning about racial injustice. Among the day’s activities was an HF employees-led webinar and conversation organized by two coworkers in the health program who are Dominican and are married to black men.

The Federation also donated the organization’s payroll for that day to three Black-led organizations and matched employee donations made to organizations working in the social justice arena. Discrimination against anyone in our society, whether based on the color of one’s skin, gender, or sexual orientation, is abhorrent to our principles as an organization and as individuals. We are proud to stand with Black Lives Matter and with all segments of society who seek justice and equality.
