Hispanic Federation Statement on Historic Georgia Runoff Elections

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 6, 2021

Hispanic Federation President Frankie Miranda issued the following statement regarding yesterday’s runoff elections in Georgia for two U.S. Senate seats:

“Last night produced historic electoral results in the State of Georgia. In two of the most hotly contested Senate races in recent American history, millions of Georgia voters exercised their constitutional right to vote and chose a path of change for their state and for the country. We look forward to working with the new leadership in Congress, including presumptive Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, to create an effective strategy to address the COVID-19 pandemic, protect and expand health care coverage, rebuild our economy, and create a fair and just immigration system. The people of Georgia and millions of other Americans have placed their trust in the Senate Democratic Majority and we will work alongside our new Congress to ensure that trust is honored.

We take special pride in the robust turnout in Georgia over the course of this election. Starting in the summer of 2018 and continuing through yesterday, Hispanic Federation (HF) partnered with the Latino Community Fund of Georgia (LCF Georgia) to drive Latino civic participation throughout the state. In November of this year, LCF Georgia and HF joined forces with GALEO and Mi Familia Vota to launch the largest ever Latino voter mobilization effort in Georgia’s history. Immediately after the historic Latino voter turnout in the 2020 general elections, we doubled down to create a comprehensive multimedia, grassroots campaign to bolster Latino civic participation in the Senate runoff elections.

Since November, our team reached over 400,000 Latino and multicultural voters through strategies such as phone and text banking, canvassing, mailers, billboards and digital ads, and radio spots. This was difficult and complex work but if the turnout numbers are any indication, the results were worth the work. National political leaders need to recognize that Latino voters are eager to reliably engage in the political process but their involvement requires investment in registration, education, and mobilization. We eagerly look forward to continuing to do that work, every single day in the months and years ahead.”
