Expanding Grant Support for Latino Nonprofits

When Hispanic Federation was created more than a quarter century ago, one of the key issues facing the Latino nonprofit sector was access to capacity-building grants. Traditional philanthropies often overlooked Latino nonprofit organizations as potential grant recipients.

In response, Hispanic Federation created the Latino CORE Initiative as its grant-making arm. Open to its network of Latino nonprofits only, the Core Initiative allows Hispanic Federation to make grants for important infrastructure projects and expenses. What’s more, Hispanic Federation committed itself to expedite the application, evaluation and funding process so that organizations could receive the money they needed when they needed it.

This year, Hispanic Federation has expanded its Core Initiative by opening two funding cycles—one in the summer and another in the fall—to give member agencies greater flexibility when applying for funds.

“One funding cycle wasn’t enough for our member agencies,” said HF President José Calderón. “It was clear to us that many of our member agencies were confronting unexpected challenges that couldn’t wait for the annual cycle of grants. After discussions with our leadership, it was clear that we could do better. I think having two funding cycles will really improve the Latino CORE Initiative and give member agencies the funding flexibility they require.”

Hispanic Federation is currently accepting applications for its summer grant cycle. To apply, please contact Almirca Santiago.
