NEW YORK
— Hispanic Federation, one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to supporting and empowering Latino communities, issued the following statement on the confirmation of Xavier Becerra as the first Latino Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services:

“The confirmation of Secretary Xavier Becerra as the nation’s first Latino to lead the Department of Health and Human Services comes at a pivotal time in our nation’s history as the agency seeks to end the coronavirus pandemic in the United States and expand access to health care to all Americans,” stated Frankie Miranda, Hispanic Federation’s President and CEO. “We are delighted that a Latino with Secretary Becerra’s vast experience and dedication to equality is now leading the largest Federal agency which is responsible for ensuring that every American is vaccinated and recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In his more than two decades of experience representing the people of California in the U.S. House of Representatives and four years as California’s Attorney General, Secretary Becerra has stood up for working people and fought back efforts to cut Medicare, Social Security and the Affordable Care Act. His commitment to ensuring every American has access to high quality, affordable health care and his track record in ensuring immigrant families are treated humanely makes Secretary Becerra the ideal leader of the department during these challenging times.

“The Hispanic Federation looks forward to working with Secretary Becerra and his team to ensure Latinos have access to and confidence in COVID-19 vaccinations and in helping our nation recover from this devastating pandemic.”
