Hispanic Federation Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order Regarding the Use of the Antiquities Act to Diminish Monuments, Parks and Public Lands

Hispanic Federation issued the following statement on President Trump’s executive order released yesterday, directing the Department of the Interior to potentially review 54 national monuments and parks designated under the Antiquities Act since 1996. The order allows the Secretary broad discretion to 'review' any national monument that the Secretary determines was expanded without 'adequate public outreach', regardless of the size of the expansion. This means that all 54 are at potential risk.

Statement on SCOTUS Nominee Neil Gorsuch

Hispanic Federation strongly opposes the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States. The Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of the United States Constitution. It's justices must guarantee every person equal protection under the law. We have serious reservations about Judge Gorsuch's ability to put aside partisan ideology to dispense justice.

Statement on Commutation of Oscar Lopez-Rivera

We stand with the people of Puerto Rico and hundreds of civil rights organizations in thanking President Obama for commuting the sentence of Oscar Lopez-Rivera, the nation’s longest serving political prisoner. Mr. Lopez-Rivera has been in federal prison for nearly half his life, serving 35 years of a sentence that far exceeds the crime that he was charged with.
